Myrka is a first-generation Dominican-American artist based in New Jersey. A 2017 School of Visual Arts graduate, her work spans illustration, painting, and digital media.
Ramas Y Semillas (Of Palms and Seeds), created from 2016 to 2018, centers on Santiago in the Dominican Republic, reflecting her spiritual connection to ancestral land. The series captures the pride and love of the Dominican community for their homeland, despite the diaspora's challenges.
Myrka is inspired by artists like John William Waterhouse and Alice Neel, her recent work reimagines the mysticism of femininity seen in Romanticism through the lens of a modern Afro-Latin woman. This evolving portrayal reveals a softer image of the Latinx women, pushing back against Western prejudices.
